Several writing systems can be found on Aeternum, left by the different cultures that once lived (or still live) on the island.

The Ancient Glyphs[]

The Ancient Glyphs, found prominently in the ruins of the Ancients. This magical[1], hieroglyphic[2] language seems to have been created by the Ancients. Each glyph represents a "wisdom" that is learned by unlocking them using an azoth staff. Some glyphs audibly hum with energy with when you are near them. When activated, glyphs glow with the blue light of azoth. The Ancient Glyphs are logographic rather than alphabetic--each represents a word or concept rather than a sound.

At Mirador Shrine in southwestern Windsward. Nessa, one of Windsward's druids asks you to return a verdant gemstone to the shrine to help heal the land and remove the curse from Windsward. Once the gem is placed in a root-like tendril on the shrine, nearby stones must be rotated to display "crossroads", "persona", "ordeal", then green light channels from the gem through the shrine.[3]

Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphics[]

The Ancient Egytian Hieroglyphic script was written in any direction the was convenient: horizontally from right to left or left to right or vertically from top to bottom. The arrangement of the glyphs was partly determined by aesthetic considerations. When written horizontally, you can tell the direction of a piece of writing by looking at the way the animals and people are facing: they look towards the beginning of the line.
