Weapon Masteries are experience paths that unlock abilities, modifiers, and bonuses for a specific type of weapon in New World. Players progress in Weapon Mastery by gaining Weapon Mastery points in battle, which scale with XP/enemy level.
"In New World, as players use a weapon, they get better with it. This manifests itself in weapon mastery points that players can spend to unlock new abilities and passive upgrades. So as a player uses their Ice gauntlet, they will earn Ice gauntlet XP and at certain thresholds be awarded a point they can use to improve the weapon. Every weapon type has two trees that offer different styles of combat, and players can mix and match or create their own specialization."
Each Weapon Mastery has 2 Skill Trees, and players are forced to choose how which portions of the Skill Trees to unlock, as it is not possible to unlock both Skill Trees fully. Only 19 total points can be obtained for each weapon, but there is no limit to how many different weapons you can master. After weapon level 10, spent Weapon Mastery points can be reset (all points refunded and can be spent again) using Azoth. Before weapon level 10, it has no cost.
