During the original release of New World for PC, First Light was one of the starting zones new players could arrive in. New players were placed in one of the starting zones randomly. They featured tutorials and intro quests.

On July 6 2023, Season 2 Blood of the Sands was released. It revamped the game and closed First Light, telling players "First Light has fallen to the might of Artemis and her Angry Earth horde! A wall of thorns has erupted along the border, barring all access into the territory until further notice."
Any players who owned a house in First Light were refunded the cost of the house and their furniture was moved into storage. However, there is a bug which does not allow players who had a house in First Light to choose a new location to build a third house. Because players must place a crafting trophy in all 3 of their houses to reach maximum crafting, this prevents former First Light homeowners from maximum crafting.
On Oct 3 2023, New World for PC's first expansion Rise of the Angry Earth was released. Players with the expansion learn that First Light has been transformed into the Elysian Wilds and can follow the expansion's main storyline to gain access to the zone.
